Greetings Essentially Major Readers!

I'm Michael Jeffrey, CEO of the newly formed enterprise, Essentially Major, LLC.

On behalf of the rest of the team, thank you all so much for checking out our blog.

Our blog has been in operation close to a year now, providing thousands of viewers around the globe with the latest fashion, fitness, and lifestyle information for today's contemporary man. In fact, the response has been so great that we've decided to take our project to the next level!

This is when I decided to form a management team of decisive, talented, ambitious, creative and fun professionals to develop an actual company, what is now known as Essentially Major, LLC. The management team and I are working diligently to prepare for the launch of the newly transformed and innovative integrated media company, Essentially Major (aka Essentially Major v2.0)!!

Therefore, in preparation for Essentially Major v2.0, we are decommissioning the blog posts until we re-launch this summer. Don't worry, we will continue to provide you updates on the transformation via our new weekly Essentially Major newsletter and our 'Teaser' site which will appear this week so stay tuned to the Essentially Major Facebook group and sign up for our email alerts for the announcement!

The megawatt smile, infectious personality and breathtaking physical ability have always been staples for Dwight Howard, on and off the basketball court. It's never been a matter of if he'd blossom into a bona fide NBA superstar, only a question of when.

After upsetting "king" (Lebron) James and his Cleveland Cavaliers to help his Orlando Magic reach the finals, Dwight Howard is on the verge of truly reaching Superman status. His time is now.

Howard has strong lower-back muscles which help him explode to the ball. They're central to every facet of his game. Dwight includes back extensions or single-leg deadlifts in every workout. Do three sets of 15 reps of either move two or three times a week.

Kobe Bryant's "Devil" Workout

One of Kobe Bryant's favorite quotes is "A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work." And from the looks of his workout, apparently the work of the devil.

This perennial NBA all-star has bulked up since his emergence in the late 90s. Some say he added as much as 40 pounds to his frame through his workout regimen. But now that he is older, he is wiser. Bryant dropped almost 20 pounds last season. It wasn't fat that he got rid of; he just cut back on training that increases muscle mass.

Kobe's workout is called the 666 workout. Numerology aside, the 666 has helped elevate Bryant to the upper echelon of greatness. Essentially, the numbers mean that he worked out six hours a day, six days a week for six months out of the year. (And be warned...it's not for the faint of heart.)

The 666 workout: 6 hours a day, 6 days a week, 6 months a year.

Tequila Sunrise (Cuervo Sunrise)

Ingredients

1.5 ounces Jose Cuervo flavored tequilas (Citrico, Oranjo or Tropina)
4 ounces orange juice
1 splash cranberry juice

Preparation
Mix the orange juice and tequila in a shaker with ice.
Strain into a highball glass filled with ice.
Finish with a splash of cranberry juice.

Breakfast-Parfaits

These parfaits are as tasty to eat as they are lovely to look at. Using low-fat yogurt saves on fat and calories while still giving you the benefits of protein and calcium. Strawberries and apricots add sweetness, and vitamin C and granola gives fiber and crunch.

Assemble everything but the granola and almonds ahead of time, and store in the refrigerator for up to an hour. Sprinkle with granola and almonds just before serving for the optimum crunch.

4 servings (serving size: 1 parfait)

Ingredients

1/3 cup apricot preserves
3 cups sliced strawberries
2 cups low-fat vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup low-fat granola without raisins (such as Kellogg's)
2 tablespoons slivered almonds, toasted

Preparation

Place apricot preserves in a medium microwave-safe bowl, and microwave at high for 10 to 15 seconds or until preserves melt. Add strawberries, and toss gently to coat.

Spoon 1/4 cup yogurt into each of 4 parfait glasses; top each serving with 1/3 cup strawberry mixture. Repeat the layers with the remaining yogurt and strawberry mixture. Top each serving with 2 tablespoons granola and 1 1/2 teaspoons almonds. Serve immediately.

Hash Brown Casserole with Bacon, Onions, and Cheese

This lightened version of a classic favorite is so rich and creamy that you'll never miss the extra fat and calories of the traditional recipe. Reduced-fat cheese is a good source of calcium, which helps build strong bones and teeth, and also prevents osteoporosis. Omit the bacon for a vegetarian option or substitute with lean turkey sausage if you wish.

Ingredients

6 bacon slices
1 cup chopped onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 (32-ounce) package frozen Southern-style hash brown potatoes
1 cup (4 ounces) preshredded Classic Melts Four Cheese blend, divided
1/2 cup chopped green onions
1/2 cup fat-free sour cream
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 (10.75-ounce) can condensed 30% reduced-sodium, 98% fat-free cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
Cooking spray

Preparation

Cook bacon in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon from pan, and crumble. Discard drippings in pan. Add 1 cup onion and garlic to pan; cook for 5 minutes or until tender, stirring frequently. Stir in the potatoes; cover and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Combine crumbled bacon, 1/4 cup cheese, green onions, sour cream, salt, pepper, and soup in a large bowl. Add potato mixture; toss gently to combine. Spoon mixture into an 11 x 7-inch baking dish coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle with remaining 3/4 cup cheese. Cover with foil coated with cooking spray. Refrigerate 8 hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 350°.

Remove casserole from refrigerator; let stand at room temperature 15 minutes. Bake casserole, covered, at 350º for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 30 minutes or until bubbly around edges and cheese begins to brown.

Grilled Sweet Potato Fingers with Curry Dip

Grilling isn't just for meat. Try this grilled vegetable sides that even carnivores will love.

Whether you serve them as a yummy appetizer or a zesty side, these potato fingers are guaranteed to be a hit with all the guests at your barbecue. Save the dip for the adults at the party–it packs a nice bite.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups light mayonnaise
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 small onion, grated
2 teaspoons mild curry powder
Salt and pepper
4 sweet potatoes (about 10 oz. each), peeled
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Preparation

Mix mayonnaise, lemon juice, onion and curry powder in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Cover and chill until ready to serve. (Dip can be made up to 2 days in advance.)

Prepare a charcoal fire, let burn to a gray ash and set grill 8 to 10 inches from coals. (Or preheat a broiler and set broiling rack 8 inches from heat source.)

Cut sweet potatoes in half crosswise, then cut each half lengthwise and then into thirds to form fingers. Each potato should yield about 12 pieces. Place fingers in a large bowl, add oil, salt, pepper and cayenne. Toss well to coat.

Grill or broil fingers, turning often, until partially charred and soft enough to easily penetrate with tip of a knife, about 10 minutes. Remove to a plate and season with salt and pepper. Serve warm with curry dip.

3. In a medium mixing bowl, whip the cream, vanilla extract, and remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar until soft peaks form. Set aside.
4. To make the layers, set a layer of ladyfingers (around 7 or 8) on the bottom of a large, clear serving bowl (ours was 4 quarts). Top with the berries with half of the pudding.
5. Add another layer of ladyfingers, another third of the berries and juice, and the rest of the pudding. Add a final layer of ladyfingers and berries. Top with the whipped cream and a berry garnish.
6. Refrigerate until you're ready to serve. Serves 8 to 10.

Caesar Potato Salad with Sugar Snap Peas

This recipe makes enough salad for a picnic in the park, or to pack in your lunch all week.

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds unpeeled assorted fingerling potatoes or baby potatoes (such as white-skinned, red-skinned, and purple), cut crosswise into 1/2-inch-thick slices
8 oz trimmed sugar snap peas
1 bunch radishes, trimmed, sliced
1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced
1/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 garlic clove, pressed
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Preparation

Steam potatoes on steamer rack set in large pot over boiling water until almost tender, about 10 minutes. Add sugar snap peas and steam until peas are crisp-tender and potatoes are just tender, about 1 minute longer. Transfer vegetables to large bowl. Cool slightly. Add radishes and onion.
Whisk next 4 ingredients in small bowl to blend. Whisk in Parmesan. Season dressing with salt and generous amount of pepper. Add dressing to potato mixture; toss to coat. Season with more salt and pepper, if desired. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Ingredients

1 (9-ounce) package fresh cheese tortellini
2 cups halved cherry tomatoes
2 cups fresh spinach leaves, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup chopped pepperoncini peppers
6 tablespoons (1 1/2 ounces) preshredded fresh Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup capers
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
1 (16-ounce) can navy beans
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil

Preparation

Cook pasta according to package directions, omitting salt and fat.

While pasta cooks, combine tomatoes, spinach, peppers, cheese, capers, basil, and beans in a large bowl. Drain pasta; rinse with cold water. Add pasta, juice, and oil to tomato mixture; toss gently. Serve immediately.

While the name of these Lifesaver Bowls ($495) is derived from their candy-like colors, their dream-like designs could sweeten even my most sour of days. I just wish I could afford one of these hand-blown masterpieces, particularly in this economy. The bowls/vases were created by New York-based glass blowing artist John Pomp, whose work has been featured in a slew of esteemed publications, such as Vogue, Elle Décor, and the now-defunct House & Garden. I hope to see much more of his work in the future . . . preferably in my own home.

Affirmative Action On The São Paulo Runways

São Paulo Fashion Week released an official statement yesterday announcing that it has signed an agreement with the São Paulo Public Ministry to fight racial discrimination on the runways. According to the agreement, São Paulo Fashion Week has the legal duty to suggest that all designers and labels include at least 10% of black or indigenous models on the castings for the shows. While SPFW cannot enforce that designers comply with the quota, the event now has to contact designers 15 days prior to the shows and suggest the booking of black models.

The event will have to report to the Public Ministry 30 days after the shows, and can be fined in R$ 250K if the 10% quota is not met.

Castings for Fashion Rio started this week, and the new 10% quota is also being suggested to designers participating in the event. I am hoping the quota will bring about more racial diversity not only on the runways, but also in editorials and campaigns from this season forward.

Cold Summer Treats

Need some relief from the scorching summer heat and humidity? Stop chasing ice cream trucks and try making some yourself.

Blackberry Ice Cream

Ingredients

3 cups sugar
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
10 cup half-and-half
8 large eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 1/2 cups fresh or 1 (1-pound) package frozen blackberries
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Garnishes: fresh mint, fresh blackberries

Preparation

Combine first 3 ingredients in a large Dutch oven. Whisk in half-and-half. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, over medium-high heat.
Slowly whisk about 4 cups of hot mixture into beaten egg. Add egg mixture to remaining hot mixture, whisking constantly, until mixture reaches 160°. (Immediately remove it from heat to prevent curdling.) Let cool completely, stirring occasionally. Stir in vanilla; chill 8 hours or overnight.
Combine blackberries and 1 1/2 cups sugar in a separate bowl; stir well. Cover and chill 8 hours, stirring occasionally to dissolve sugar. Stir in lemon juice.
Stir berry mixture into custard mixture. Pour into container of a 4-quart ice-cream maker. Freeze according to manufacturer's instructions; if recommended, pack freezer with additional ice and rock salt, and let stand 1 hour before serving. Scoop into serving bowls; garnish, if desired.
Note: To hasten cooling of custard mixture, partially fill sink with ice water to come about halfway up sides of Dutch oven. Let pan remain in ice-water bath, stirring often until room temperature; chill.
