"He can't see without his glasses!" - Anna Chlumsky in the 1991 film My Girl
When I was eight my mom insisted that I was pretending to have vision problems just so she would have to buy me glasses like Dwayne Wayne's on a Different World. She was partially right; those were the glasses I wanted. It was only when I came home with a note from the school nurse that she accepted they were also what I needed.
Of course I didn't get them anyway. In fact what I ended up with looked more like the frames that have been showing up on the runway lately. Maybe mom knew they would someday be fashionable. Maybe they were the only decent frames our insurance could afford. Either way, even though I now mostly wear contacts, I wish those old frames were still in my closet somewhere.
