A respected Japanese artist during the Great Depression, Eitario Ishigaki was also a prominent member of the Communist Party in New York City and the graphic division of the FAP/WPA. He was a strong supporter of African American rights. This painting was originally part of a mural he created under the New Deal Art project. Shortly after finishing the mural, Ishigaki was arrested and deported for his involvement in the communist John Reed Club. This historical piece represents his empathy for African Americans during this time. This poignant theme is also found in his other works.
