Legendary Icon Eartha Kitt Dies

In 1953 Eartha Kitt released her single "Santa Baby". For the past 55 years her song has been a listening tradition at Christmas time and ironically she passed away on Christmas day. She was 81 years old.

Born on January 26th, 1928 in South Carolina, she was eight when she went to live with her aunt in Harlem. In high school she was involved in various performing arts including drama, dance, piano, and also sang in her school choir.

At 16 she joined the Katherine Dunham Dance Troupe and toured Europe. While there she decided to aggresively pursue singing as well. Orson Wells once called Eartha "the most exciting women in the world" and signed her up to star as Helen of Troy in his production of Dr. Fraust in Paris. Her first leading film was Time Runs, also an Orson Wells production. She is mostly known for her role as Catwoman from 1967 and to 1968 on the Batman television series.

While attending a luncheon at the White House in 1968, Eartha denounced the Vietnam War in front of President Johnson, which led to a blacklisting that prevented her from getting a job in America for 6 years.

A Quote by Eartha Kitt:
"As long as that audience gives me the type of applause that they gave me tonight, why shouldn't I go on?"
