Major Man : Lamar Ariel

Authenticity is always an essential character trait of all things major. On the surface it can seem easier to hide who you are behind a veil of what everyone else wants you be. It’s much harder - yet far more fulfilling - to be exactly who you are each and everyday, regardless of the criticism or acclaim you might be met with.

Author Lamar Ariel is major for so many reasons; talented, creative, passionate, and most importantly unafraid to be vulnerable and authentic to the world through his writing. His book, Ready To Male, is a collection of letters that explore the black gay male identity in a way that has never been done before. Pick up your copy immediately (if you haven’t already) and get to know the author himself right here on Essentially Major.

Name: Lamar Ariel

Age: Too-Damn-Close-To-Thirty

Occupation: Full-Time Observational Self-Therapist and Part-Time Writer

Background: Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago.

How would you describe your personal style? Trend-less and simple yet always interesting.

What is your "go-to" item the one thing you cannot live without: Kobu candles, my whirlpool tub, and a good sweaty sleep.

What has been your biggest obstacle in life that you overcame or that you intend to overcome? Learning to understand before trying to be understood.

Are you currently in a relationship? Are you more comfortable with someone or by yourself? Yes I am in a relationship. I prefer to spend equal parts with myself and a super-special snuggle bear.

What is your worst date story? I went to the Mandarin Oriental in Manhattan for after dinner drinks with a very sexy man from Texas. As things apparently were going too well for a first date, he decided to force a conversation about religion. When we didn't agree on my terminology for the bible—"wonderful collection of fiction"—he became offended and excused himself to the bathroom and never returned. He was a good Christian though, he "text" me from the cab on his way home. The text said, "Can’t date an atheist!" I laughed, ordered another drink, and fell into a sentimental mood about dating in NYC.

What is your biggest flaw? I am impatient.

What will you be doing in 2009 i.e., projects, goals, etc.? Wrapping up Part 2 of Ready to Male, visiting Paris and South Africa, and figuring out the next person I'd like to become.

What do you hate? Liars, and fear-mongers.

What do you love? Truth and messengers of hope.

What's your favorite curse word? Hmm. It's a tie between bitch and fuck. I think I will coin, fubbitch in 2009.

What's your favorite food? Crawfish.

What makes you a major man?
I write letters that speak to the universal emotions and experiences within the GLBT community. I believe that men, especially those who love, live, and look like me should be better prepared and skilled at sharing their emotions. My letters, specifically those included in my book, Ready to Male, are my vulnerable attempt to practice what I preach. I hope they inspire others to write their own letters. Not so much to be understood but to understand themselves.

Any final thoughts? I'm always looking for Major Friends, visit my website:
