We are each born with a gift. Some call it talent, while others refer to it as our individual purpose in life. But whichever way you choose to see it, the only thing that stands between nurturing that gift into fulfillment is the fear we all have of our own greatness. It takes a major man to turn fear on its head and allow all of his talent and purpose to take him further than he could ever dream.
Major Man of the week Malcolm Harris knows all about taking a gift and constructing an empire. His eye for detail and design have birthed a clothing line of womenswear - Mal Sirrah - so passionate and expressive that its received widespread acclaim, both on and off the runway. And it doesn't just stop with fashion. He's currently expanding to design commercial interiors around Manhattan as well. Listen and learn as the man himself shares some of the secrets to his success right now, only on Essentially Major.

Name: Malcolm Harris (aka Mal Sirrah)
Age: Old enough to know better and to show others the way
Occupation: Social Activist/Designer
Background: I was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica and raised in Coral Gables, Florida by hardworking and loving parents. I received my Master’s Degree in English Literature from New York University before attending F.I.T. where I graduated with a degree in Fashion Design. Coming from a family which put education and community service above all else, it was much more important to me to lay a solid educational foundation for myself before heading into my passion of fashion design.
How would you describe your personal style? My personal style at the moment would perhaps be considered “Gothic Urban Warrior”… LOL… I believe that one’s personal style should always find itself evolving and morphing. Every day I wake up I carefully “curate” an ensemble to express to the world exactly how I am feeling. As a person that is somewhat shy, my sense of style has erased a great deal of the idle chatter one might otherwise have to deal within a landmine like New York City.
Do you have a favorite Designer? If so, what is a must have? My favorite designer is and will always be, Yves Saint Laurent. Therefore, any vintage piece I can get my hands on designed by Monsieur YSL himself is a must have item. For me, the holy grail of YSL would be a chocolate velvet tuxedo jacket.
Who/What is your biggest influence in life? Influences for me change all the time. At the moment, my hugest influence I would say is the style icon - Daphne Guinness. Daphne is a dear friend and has taught me a great deal regarding embracing one’s dark side under the condition your spirit is filled with light. I don’t know of any other way to convey my influences outside of “purpose, passion and contribution”… Therefore I would have to say the biggest influence in my life has been the comfort of knowing I have done all the “real work” to ensure my purpose, passion and contribution to the legacy of my people will not be forgotten.
What has been your biggest obstacle in life that you've overcome? The biggest obstacle I have been forced to overcome is my ego. I think ego is the biggest killer of creativity and mobility. However, I can proudly report that my ego has been put in its proper place and only comes out to play once the real work has been done.
Are you currently in a relationship? Are you more comfortable with someone or by yourself? My partner, Tyson Perez (Editor-In-Chief of UNVOGUE Magazine), have been together for almost seven years and our relationship is our pride joy. We have learned over the years to make our friendship a priority and to keep our relationship absolutely sacred.
What is your biggest turn-off? My biggest turn-off is a negative disposition.
What is your biggest turn-on? My biggest turn-on is courage. I am surrounded by courageous and brilliant individuals.
What will you be doing in 2009?2009 has already been a terrific year so far! I have executive produced and directed a music video for a huge Saudi female artist (Waed – Bhahabbek Giddan – I Love You So Much). I have designed a five-star restaurant on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and have been commissioned to design a hotel by the same firm. I have a limited edition dress collection being released in the near future and then I plan to take a trip to the moon. But seriously, I have more projects and goals ahead then this interview would allow me to explain. However, if readers really want to know, they will join me on FaceBook where I have joined the world in strategically documenting my every waken moment. Once again, sad but true.
What do you hate? The word HATE!!!
What do you love? I love the potential of man and womankind.
What’s your favorite curse word? MOTHERFUCKER!!! I rarely curse, but when I do this word is a quick fix. Followed by meditation and chanting of course.
What’s your favorite food? Sushi, sushi, sushi… And if the sushi is prepared at Nobu, I’m in heaven.
What makes you a major man? I hope what makes me a major man is the same thing that makes me a major son, friend, lover, social activist or designer… And that is living my life by one golden rule: “To leave the world a better place than I found it.” My life is as simple and “major” as that.

Some men have good looks while others are blessed with charm and wit. Then there are those that are all brains and some that are packed full with a sense of humor instead. But leave it to a major man to have all of those sought after qualities wrapped up into one dynamic personality.
Such is the case for our Major Man of the Week, Ben Patrick Johnson. Author, Activist, Actor, Model, and Philanthropist, Ben has found a way to take all of his passions and turn them each into successful business endeavors. And it only takes one conversation with him to understand that its more about effecting change than stock piling money. Whether he's organizing people to vote against Prop. 8 in California or speaking out against human injustice on his web cast Life on the Left Coast, you always know that he truly puts his heart into everything he touches. See for yourself as we sat down with the man of the week right here, only on Essentially Major.

Name: Ben Patrick Johnson
Age: 39
Occupation: Actor/Author/Activist
Background: I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. I’m the youngest child in a family of missionary schoolteachers. I grew up poor, frozen, and sometimes hungry, but there was always a roof over my head and I was well-fed with music and knowledge and there always seemed to be just enough money for us to take rambling summer trips across America.
How would you describe your personal style? I’d describe my style as global/eccentric. I try to think green and make choices that reflect a responsibility to my environment and community. But then I go and do things like bring home six pet tortoises or build a small TV studio in my guest bedroom. As far as dress and flash, I’ve gotten a lot less flashy in recent years. My Range Rover and 6 Series are gone. Turns out a Prius works just as well!
Do you have a favorite designer? I’m fine with grubby sweats. I just ask that things match and make my butt look great.
What is your “go-to” item the one thing you cannot live without? My MacBook Air. I don’t do well without internet access these days.
Who is your biggest influence in life? I am hugely appreciative of the example, set for me by my parents, of living life both humbly and ‘out loud’ at the same time.
What has been your biggest obstacle in life that you overcame or that you intend to overcome? I struggle with feelings of unworthiness, of being selfish and small-minded. Each time I hear myself gossip, or respond from racial or sexual bias, or even am unnecessarily short with someone, it pains me. That’s not the man I wish to be.
Are you currently in a relationship? Are you more comfortable with someone or by yourself? I’m casually seeing someone. I’m also quite fine being with myself. If a man can add something new of value to the equation, bring it on. But I don’t need someone around just to have a warm body present.
What is your worst date story? There’s not enough space here to detail all the miserable first dates I’ve been on. Now I just have sex first (in order to skip the first date ridiculousness) and proceed directly to date #2. Kidding. (Not kidding.)
What is your biggest flaw? There’s likewise not enough space here to even start that list. Probably my moodiness. Or my desire to always be right. Or my flirtatiousness. Or …
What will you be doing in 2009? I have a new novel coming out this spring, If The Rains Don't Cleanse. In it, I tell the story of my parents remarkable experiences in Africa in the 1950s. They went there as schoolteachers and barely got out amid the torture, rape and burnings that marked the 1960 Congo independence. I expect to do some more fitness modeling this year. I want to work with a few photographers whose vision I admire but whom I’ve not had a chance to shoot with yet. I will continue to add my voice and efforts to getting Prop 8 in California reversed and to moving our nation toward a Federal marriage policy that includes all people including LGBT Americans.
What do you hate? Blind bigotry. Religious intolerance. Homophobia. Talking heads on TV who, lacking good ideas, resort to name-calling (like cum laude Cornell graduate Ann Coulter on CNN recently calling Scott McClennan a “retard” because she doesn’t like what he wrote in his book.)
What do you love? Patience and unconditional acceptance.
What’s your favorite curse word?Motherfuck. Just plain “fuck” is so great it’s hard to improve, but motherfuck has a certain flair to it.
What’s your favorite food? Vanilla ice cream with peanut butter on top. (Melt the peanut butter slightly in the microwave first and it re-congeals after you drizzle it on the cold ice cream.)
Any final thoughts? Always do your best. And if you fall short today, don’t beat yourself up too badly--tomorrow is the start of a new ‘always’.
Commanding an audience is no easy feat. And it can become much more difficult to accomplish when you're expected to sing, act, and dance flawlessly all at the same time. Yet night after night Major ManAnthony Wayne does just that through his performance as Richie in the touring company of Broadway's classic A Chorus Line.
Seemingly with ease, his years of experience and training come together to entertain audiences around the country in this classic story of seventeen aspiring dancers that are put to the test for a chance in the spotlight. But Mr. Anthony doesn't wish to stop there. He has his sights set on becoming the kind of triple threat that will make his name a familiar part of every household. Learn more about his many endeavors in the entertainment industry by checking out his website AWayne.com and get to know the man himself up close and personal right here on Essentially Major.

Name: Anthony Wayne
Age: 27
Occupation: Richie in the First Broadway Revival National Tour of “A Chorus Line”
Do you have a favorite Designer? Kenneth Cole, Georgio Armani, and Coach.
What is your “go-to” item the one thing you cannot live without? Most recently it hasn’t been a thing. It’s been an act. I’ve been praying much more. It’s keeping me grounded as my career begins to blossom.
Who is your biggest influence in life? I know it might sound typical, but I have to say my mother. She’s said things to me that I’ll always remember and tend to keep with me; things that keep my humble and grounded as well. No matter what happens, whenever I go home, I’m just still little Anthony that taps and sings.
What has been your biggest obstacle in life that you've overcome? I’ve dealt with people and situations that have said, “No, you can’t…”, “No, you won’t…”, and through it all, I’ve been able to realize that there’s so much to do in life that you can’t allow anyone to steal your joy. Hold on to it, always and know that life is for the living, so get yours!
Are you currently in a relationship? No, not in a relationship as of now, but taking applications. (smile)
What do you look for in somebody? Drive, ambition, strength, happiness in Self and what there is to come, good stimulating conversation, and someone who will stimulate my mind as well as my body.
What is your worst date story? I dated this one guy and found him totally attractive, however, he was texting on his phone the entire time. I got the point where I felt like he needed to be with whomever he was texting.
What is your biggest flaw? Letting go of control in certain situations. I’ve def been working on it. Everyone does things different and the truth about it is no one is going to do what you do like you, so don’t expect them to. It’s all good.
What will you be doing in 2009? I’m in the process of working on a book, developing a musical, getting into Commercial/Print work and will take the time to learn how to become a much better and strong actor. Eventually, I’m expecting to have conquered Broadway, Movies, T.V. and so much more. Anything’s possible.
What do you hate? That’s such a strong word. Negativity. I’m such an optimistic person that someone with a negative attitude energy will shut me off quickly.
What do you love? People who overcome obstacles in the face of adversity. I admire that strength so much.
What’s your favorite curse word? Well, it used to be “shit”, but I sing that in my show every night, so that’s gotten a little old. I really LOVE the word, “BITCH”. It seems to just put the right period on everything. (LoL)
What makes you a major man? I believe that as I continuously grow to learn about myself, becoming a Major Man in this day in age is embodying the strength to what you love and passionate about in every way with out any regrets and encouraging people who are inspired by you. That’s my goal; to be that person that young people look up to and say, “Wow, Anthony Wayne is doing it…so can I, no matter what”.
Anyone that still believes hip hop can only come in one casing has clearly been listening with their ears and minds closed for the past twenty years. After all, hip hop’s most essential quality is its universality. Hip hop is love, its pain, and it’s the story of a life set to music and words, all wrapped up in a rhythm that everyone can bob their head to.
Major Man of the week Bry’Nt is no exception to this legacy. Both lyrically vibrant and melodic, his music takes you on a journey; a day in the life - if you will - of gay rapper that’s determined to transcend all the obstacles the industry has in his way. On tracks like Transformers and Not Home he puts together that familiar New York street sound with his own unique yet tailor made for story telling flow he'll soon be famous for. Check them out now on his MySpace page and get to know the man himself up close and personal right here on Essentially Major.

What is your “go-to” item? I can't live without my IPOD!
Who/What is your biggest influence in life? My biggest influence in life is mom dukes of course! I learned most of what I need to survive in life from her.
What has been your biggest obstacle in life that you overcame or that you intend to overcome? My biggest obstacle in life has been dealing with the adversity that comes with being an openly gay rap artist. Definitely working hard to overcome that.
Are you currently in a relationship? I am currently dating someone. I find comfort whether I am by myself or whether I am just with someone that makes me feel comfortable, if that makes sense. *LOL*
What is your biggest turn-off? My biggest turn-off is someone who is self-absorbed.
What is your biggest turn-on? My biggest turn-on is someone with a beautiful smile.
What is your worst date story? Luckily, I don't have one.
What is your biggest flaw? My biggest flaw is my tendency to procrastinate.
What will you be doing in 2009 i.e., projects, goals, etc.? My second mix tape, "Porn Star II: The Director's Cut" will be released this Spring then I will begin a Pride tour beginning this Spring as well.
What do you hate? I hate not getting enough sleep!

What’s your favorite curse word? Fuck!
What’s your favorite food? My favorite food is Japanese food, particularly spicy tuna rolls.
What makes you a major man? I am a Major Man because what I've done in rap music is seen as very transgressive. I've given a voice to the gay black man in a clever way and have become a more realistic figure for us as well.
Any final thoughts? Check out the Myspace page to download my first mix tape "Porn Star" for free and hear songs off of my forthcoming mixtape "Porn Star II: The Director's Cut". Also My song "Porn Star (Tramont's Remix)" can be heard on the soundtrack of the adult film BLAK (Brothas Live And Kinky) produced by Forbidden Funk Media. You can find me as a model in Francois Rousseau's nude photography book "Atelier". I am also in Spin Magazine's March 2009 issue in an article entitled "Straight Outta The Closet" and will be in Bleu Magazine's March/April Issue. You will be able to see me perform at various Pride events up and down the east coast and mid-west this Spring and Summer.
Some people are thrust into the spotlight. They have a talent and someone else decides to put them on display for all the world to see. A Major Man, however, is born in the spotlight. Its inherent and follows him every where he goes. His entire life is spent finding the right stage and the right crowd to put the full breadth of his talents on display.
Meet Emmanuel Balogun, a 19 year old London showstopper that's finding his way in the world and taking the spotlight with him. Stylish, stunning, and sophisticated; whether or not he ends up on the runways of Milan or writing for British Vogue is irrelevant. He's on the verge of greatness either way it goes. Get to know him while the getting is good right here and now on Essentially Major.

How would you describe your personal style? Very electric, I dress differently everyday...I just do looks.
Do you have a favorite Designer? Either Jil Sander or Raf Simons… my Raf Simons must have has to be a pair of vintage Raf Simons boots, I have searched for Raf Boots for too long.
What is your “go-to”? My biker jacket or afro comb.. my hair relies on that shit for bounce.
Who is your biggest influence in life? My mother
What has been your biggest obstacle in life that you overcame or that you intend to overcome? (Defining my) masculinity and my sexuality
Are you currently in a relationship? I have just come out of a relationship. I am now single.
What is your worst date story? Hmm – my worst date story would have to be, smoking and drinking too much on a first date…telling my date I was going to the toilet only for him to find me conked out lying down in the corner of a bar an hour later.
What is your biggest flaw? Hmm my big nipples.
What will you be doing in 2009? Getting to know a few more people in the industry, building a bigger name for myself as a journalist and travel more.
What do you hate? Exclamation marks!!!!
What do you love? Looking shit hot.
What’s your favorite curse word? Too many to narrow it down to just one.
What’s your favorite food? I am really into fish right now…Any kind of Salmon dish.
What makes you a major man? Mmmhmm I personally don’t think of myself as major yet, but I will be. I have so much more to accomplish before I deserve praise. So I would say that, the fact that I am not satisfied with being deemed the title as major for the reason that I have a lot more major things to accomplish, is what makes me one.
Dressing well is a skill, but being the mind behind the design is what’s truly major.
Meet Major Man of the week Eddie Woodward. Born and raised in Atlanta with a swag to match, he’s hell bent on putting the south on everyone’s fashion forward radar. His clothing line ‘geul.den bear kouture is a lot like the man himself; classically refined yet edgy and memorable all at the same time. Be on the look out this year for the launch of geuldenbearkouture.com and in the meantime, get to know the man with the magic right here on Essentially Major.

How would you describe your personal style? I can’t…It’s whatever I have with me…jeans, tee, cardigan, or even a 2-button Ralph Lauren Purple Label suit. I guess I style for any occasion…something like a 4 door Benz coupe…lol
Do you have a favorite Designer? I don’t have just one…but some of my favorite designers are Ralph Lauren/classic. Its hard to go wrong with Ralph. I also like Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, and Zac Posen.
What is your “go-to” item? A pair of shades; rather it’s the black & gold Alpina or the black & gold 607 Cazal / the Retro RUN DMC joints.
Who is your biggest influence in life? I will have to say my mom and family. In their eyes, I can achieve anything.
What has been your biggest obstacle in life that you overcame or that you intend to overcome? Getting Atlanta to be noticed as a fashion city. When thinking of fashion, you immediately think of Paris, Milan, New York…you don’t think of Atlanta.
Are you currently in a relationship? Yes…almost 8 years. If you are an asset, then with someone. But if you are a liability, then by myself.
What do you look for in somebody? One of the characteristics I look for in a female is style. She also must be confident, independent and ambitious. I like females that can dress for any occasion and ask for my input only because she values my opinion, but knows in her mind that she is on point.
What is your biggest turn-off? Those females that feel its automatic for the man to pay for everything instead getting her own and take care of self.
What is your biggest turn-on? A female that takes care of herself physical and mentally.
What is your biggest flaw? I think I may be a borderline perfectionist. It’s a gift and a curse. Sometimes I have plans to go out but may not make it if I don’t feel like I’m well together. You only have one time to make a first impression.
What will you be doing in 2009 i.e., projects, goals, etc.? Besides working on more product placements and releasing ‘geul.den bear kouture new collection. Launching of geuldenbearkouture.com. What do you love? A peace of mind and fashion gives me that.
What’s your favorite curse word? I don’t have one…I like them all…lol
What’s your favorite food? I’m a big Sushi eater but will settle for a Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich on any day.
What makes you a major man? I’ll let you be the judge.
Any final thoughts? I want to to thank some important people. First, God of coarse. He gave me the gift make ‘geul.den bear kouture possible. Now for the supporting cast…my mom, brother, dad, Reba/my first customer, Ebonie/Geul.den Carter ENT, Cal/Lilboy ENT, Joeleo/Good Life Clothing Company, celebrity stylist Reno V./Status, Xavier/ X Mark the Spot ENT, The WorldWide Mayor “Darryl”/They Might Be Taping, YO/UNI, Ken/Psenforcement, Sharnette, Aiesha, Phil, RIP “Kyle Jennings” and “Baby”.
"The commercialization of romance these days is inescapable. You can’t even Google a good take out Chinese restaurant or an assisted living facility for single twentysomethings without being bombarded by fluttery Anne Geddes cupid dolls and heart-shaped symbols replacing all the O’s in the English language."

While all men of style may share similar interests from time to time, a truly major man is nothing if not in love with his individuality. It's what makes him memorable, dynamic, and never mistakable as a just another fad or trend. He is what trends are made of; a new and fresh interpretation of life that inspires others to follow suit.
Meet Major Man of the week RAHBI. So uniquely himself that just one name will do. An artist in every since of the word, RAHBI takes audiences on a musical journey uncategorizable by any that have come before him. Just as easy as he reaches back to modernized old school soul on hits like Another Chance, he can turn around and infuse a slow jam like Take You 2 A Dream with a melodic jazz inspired feel. Both tracks are included on his album Raw Live, curently available on itunes. But you can get to know the man himself right here and now only on Essentially Major.

Any final thoughts? Continue to spread the word! I'm nothing without the support of my beautiful people. www.myspace.com/RAHBI and music available on iTunes or www.cdbaby.com/RAHBIMUSIC.
As liberal and limitless as the American fashion industry claims to be, it often publicly struggles with living up to its reputation in matters of diversity. While in recent years we've started to see that tide slowly turn towards being more inclusive, it still takes a Major Man to be audacious enough to push the limits of beauty even further than anyone could have ever anticipated.
Major Man of the week Shaun Ross is no stranger when it comes to standing out. And instead of letting his uniqueness keep him from pursuing his love of fashion and modeling, he's using it to push him to the forefront of the industry; both on and off the runway. So before he's swept off into the fashion week frenzy, get to know him up close and personal right here on Essentially Major.

What makes you a Major Man? I am a Major Man because I go through lots of different obstacles everyday that the average person does not have to face. If I wasn’t major, I wouldn’t be able to take ownership of the title "First Albino Male Model".
Authenticity is always an essential character trait of all things major. On the surface it can seem easier to hide who you are behind a veil of what everyone else wants you be. It’s much harder - yet far more fulfilling - to be exactly who you are each and everyday, regardless of the criticism or acclaim you might be met with.
Author Lamar Ariel is major for so many reasons; talented, creative, passionate, and most importantly unafraid to be vulnerable and authentic to the world through his writing. His book, Ready To Male, is a collection of letters that explore the black gay male identity in a way that has never been done before. Pick up your copy immediately (if you haven’t already) and get to know the author himself right here on Essentially Major.

Occupation: Full-Time Observational Self-Therapist and Part-Time Writer
Background: Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago.
How would you describe your personal style? Trend-less and simple yet always interesting.
What is your "go-to" item the one thing you cannot live without: Kobu candles, my whirlpool tub, and a good sweaty sleep.
What has been your biggest obstacle in life that you overcame or that you intend to overcome? Learning to understand before trying to be understood.
Are you currently in a relationship? Are you more comfortable with someone or by yourself? Yes I am in a relationship. I prefer to spend equal parts with myself and a super-special snuggle bear.
What is your worst date story?I went to the Mandarin Oriental in Manhattan for after dinner drinks with a very sexy man from Texas. As things apparently were going too well for a first date, he decided to force a conversation about religion. When we didn't agree on my terminology for the bible—"wonderful collection of fiction"—he became offended and excused himself to the bathroom and never returned. He was a good Christian though, he "text" me from the cab on his way home. The text said, "Can’t date an atheist!" I laughed, ordered another drink, and fell into a sentimental mood about dating in NYC.
What is your biggest flaw? I am impatient.
What will you be doing in 2009 i.e., projects, goals, etc.? Wrapping up Part 2 of Ready to Male, visiting Paris and South Africa, and figuring out the next person I'd like to become.
What do you hate? Liars, and fear-mongers.
What do you love? Truth and messengers of hope.
What's your favorite curse word? Hmm. It's a tie between bitch and fuck. I think I will coin, fubbitch in 2009.
What's your favorite food? Crawfish. What makes you a major man? I write letters that speak to the universal emotions and experiences within the GLBT community. I believe that men, especially those who love, live, and look like me should be better prepared and skilled at sharing their emotions. My letters, specifically those included in my book, Ready to Male, are my vulnerable attempt to practice what I preach. I hope they inspire others to write their own letters. Not so much to be understood but to understand themselves.
Any final thoughts? I'm always looking for Major Friends, visit my website: www.readytomale.com or shoot me a message on Facebook or Myspace. And in person, I certainly don't run away from hugs.
Our little fashionable family isn't so little anymore. Meet the latest addition to the Essentially Major crew, Sports & Fitness Editor and Major Man of the week, Chapman.
A true Major Man, after all, isn't only fashion forward. He's well informed on all matters and is especially attentive to how he takes care of his body. As a certified personal trainer for five years, Chapman has seen it all and is well equipped to tackle whatever fitness obstacle you're attempting to overcome. We sat down with the man of the week to run him through the Major Man litmus test and I think you'll all agree he passed with flying colors.
